I love a good packing challenge. For our most recent trip, I was able to fit all of our belongings for ONE WEEK in ONE carry-on – for a family of four! (That’s two adults, two kids, and 1-2 pairs of shoes apiece plus snacks). Disclaimer: we’ll take a backpack for things we might need en-route, too. I don’t use packing cubes to make space, but I do try to find the balance between bringing what we will need and pairing things down to the essentials of what will be used. Allow me to share some simple packing tips, and a wish that everything falls beautifully into place for your upcoming vacation:
A-LIST: I make a list on my iPhone of everything each person needs – clothing, toiletries/first aid, footwear or accessories like sunglasses and electronics/chargers. Everything goes on that list, no matter how seemingly obvious it is to bring, otherwise I’m sure it would become lost in the shuffle. Once it’s safely in the bag, it gets deleted from the list.
HOW’S THE WEATHER: I add the location of where we’re headed to my iPhone, so I have a better idea of what we’ll need (on this recent trip the weekly forecast looked sunny, and in one day it changed to all rain and thunderstorms, so there you go!)
ROLL IT LIKE MARIE: Instead of folding clothes, I roll them. This is an amazing Marie Kondo method that I’ve been doing for over a decade. A good rule is to put your heaviest items on the bottom (like shoes). When you roll your clothes you can fit them tidily in your suitcase and also stack them, Tetris style, in the nooks and crannies that are created for maximum space.
EDIT LIKE ANNA: I find it most practical to put everything in one room, do a final edit with a critical eye, and then pack. I also like outfits and comfortable shoes that can double during the day and the night. My go-to is sustainably-minded designer Eileen Fisher – I’ve worn her maxi dresses on the train and her gladiator sandals chasing toddlers in the airport in both comfort and style (check and check).
SAMPLE SIZE ME – SOMETIMES: I need to have skincare and makeup that’s tried and true when I travel – my skin is super sensitive, and who wants to deal with breakouts or dryness on the road? If an item comes in a sample size or packette, perfect. If not, I’m saving so much space by rolling my clothes I don’t feel bad packing a condensed (but full) cosmetics bag with products that work best for my skin.
May I recommend below in full-sizes to keep skin healthy on your journey:
Named by Departures Magazine as a skincare on-the-go essential, this set is a real multi-tasker and well worth the real estate in your carry-on. Skin can get dehydrated or irritated in the traveling process: Soft Sweep Micellar Cleanser + Toner gently wipes away dirt, oil and light makeup and sunscreen while Deep Moisture Fix (a frequent flyer must-have) plumps and cushions skin with multi-level Hyaluronic Acid. Care Skincare also offers sample packettes that are great for travel (but it’s a one-time thing, not a subscription). Find more details here.
Whether you’re headed to the beach, the city or enjoying the great outdoors, I wish you bon voyage. Leave me a comment about your upcoming (or recent) trip and your packing strategy!
